Don't Forget To Remember

Another Psalm of Asaph and it begins with more prompting to remember what God has done...to remember His wondrous works...to share them with the generations to come. In other words, don't forget to remember!

What can you remember today of how God has worked in your life? What can you do today to share His wondrous works with others?

I remember how He saved me physically from what was to the human eye sure death in a car accident. I remember how God wove little and big details alike into my life to draw me closer to Him. I won't forget how He opened doors for me to share of His greatness and I won't stop praising Him for His mighty hand of protection.

The Bible In 90 Days

One of my goals for this summer was to read through the Bible in 90 days using the fabulous Bible that my Mom & Dad gave me for Christmas. So I brought it out on June 1st and worked my way through. I missed a few days, but even so it was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend anyone taking the time to do this. Here is my "official" review...

The Bible in 90 Days: Cover to Cover in 12 Pages a Day (New International Version) The Bible in 90 Days: Cover to Cover in 12 Pages a Day by Ted Cooper Jr.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
WOW! This was hard, but it was well worth it!

I will be honest and admit that I missed a few days, but it was still a wonderful time in the Word. It was intense and took about 45 minutes a day, but being saturated in the Word like that was an amazing experience. If you feel like a dry sponge that has nothing left to squeeze out...then I hope you do more than consider taking this 90 day challenge. You will be dripping wet again and will soak anyone who bumps into you!

While you can google reading plans on the web and print of the 90 plan, actually buying this special Bible was well worth the money. It was easily marked which made it possible to focus on what I was reading instead of counting pages while reading. And reading the easy flow of the NIV was nice when reading such huge portions in one sitting.

I walked away feeling like I had a much better grasp on the Bible, especially the Old Testament. It is all fresh in my mind and I now have a much clearer understanding of the "big picture".

Godliness Through Discipline

Godliness Through Discipline Godliness Through Discipline by Jay Edward Adams

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Does discipline sound like something really hard, or at least something you really don't want to learn about?

Jay Adams gives a short, yet powerful overview and in depth look at how we can grow in godliness through discipline. It's through God's grace in our lives that produces the desire to learn to grow.

This short booklet will encourage you to keep on keeping on, to keep trying, to keep working, knowing that each time you try and work at it you get a little bit better. God uses the simple things in life to grow us.

The God Empowered Wife

The God Empowered Wife: How Strong Women Can Help Their Husbands Become Godly Leaders The God Empowered Wife: How Strong Women Can Help Their Husbands Become Godly Leaders by K. B. Haught

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
How would you describe yourself? Independent? Strong? Decisive? Spunky? Confident? Hard working? Responsible? Natural Leader?

If you would apply any one, or combination, of those words to yourself then this book is what you need to read. NOW! K.B. Haught uses her tragic testimony to encourage others to understand and grasp God's plan for us strong women. God made no mistake in how He made us, we just need to understand how He wants to use us.

I have read many solid Christian books about being the wife that God wants me to be, but this one touched my heart on several points that I have never before been able to fully understand. If you want to be a wife that brings glory to God then this book is a must read for you. And when you do read it, be sure to comment on it. I would love to hear other thoughts about what you learned.

Remembering Without Rehashing

Today is day 1 for the 2009-2010 Word Of Life Quiet Time! I took the summer off to read through the Bible in 90 days and am looking forward to getting back into my normal routine. Also this summer I saved up my money and purchased the Warren Wiersbe commentary set and I am really looking forward to their additional insight as I dig into God's Word.

As I read through Psalm 77 I could relate to the emotion that this passage brings about. Could you? Have you ever been in a tough situation and wondered what God was doing? Have you felt yourself sinking into discouragement and then finally had that moment where you felt God lift you up and you began to reflect and remember His goodness rather than wallow in the pit of despair?

I have. In fact, I can feel tears sting my eyes as I even think about those moments in my life.

The writer of this Psalm, Asaph, is feeling low as he begins to pen his thoughts. But as he writes you see the up swing as he goes from despair to a determination to reflecting on God's deliverance.

As I thought about this passage I was reminded of Philippians 3:13-14:

"Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet ; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

It is important for us to reflect on what God has done in our lives and in the lives of other believers; yet we have to be careful that we don't look back and dig up things that should not be dug up. I applied this passage to my life by being challenged to remember what God has done and to praise Him for it while being careful to not allow my mind to think on things that don't glorify God.

Thinking about a hard or bad situation in your life and how God used it to draw you closer to Himself is fine. But allowing your mind to think about the details and what a person said and how it hurt is not okay to remember. You need to ask God to help you forgive if you haven't already, and if you have, give it back to God...again.

Crazy Love

Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God by Francis Chan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a book I will revist many times over through the next few months. The message is powerful and overwhelming and each time you read a portion you will gain something more. The point is God's love for us in a depth that most of us never take time to think about.

My Journey

I have alluded to what I've been doing in some of my recent posts like this one, and now I'm going to share with you all about what it is that I have been doing.

I wasn't sure if I was going to share this, but now that my journey is 6 hours away from being over I want to do so in order to encourage the women who read this blog. So here goes...

This is day 40 for me of a 40 day fast. I've called it my 40 Days In The Desert Journey and I blogged through this journey over at 40 Days In The Desert. It was a closed blog but I just opened it up for anyone to read so that others may use it to encourage them in their own journeys. I used a book called "Hunger Pains" as my coach and companion through this journey and it was such a huge help to me that I figured offering my journal as a source of help could be an encouragement to others, too.

I have begun a discussion about fasting over in my BlogFrog forum and I would love to have you hop over there and share your thoughts about fasting with me and others who join us. Click here to join us.

This is hard for me to do. This has been a very personal journey and while it has been exciting and invigorating, it's also been hard and emotional. But as hard as it is to open up and be vulnerable with people I have never met, I want to grow and I want to learn more and I have come to understand the importance and need for the help of fellow soldiers in the army of God. I am not going to beg you to share with me and leave me a comment, but if God gives you something to share I would love to hear about it. Whether you have fasted or not, I want to know what others out there are learning, experiencing, and how they are growing in this way.

So now you know what I've been doing. What has God been teaching you lately?

What I've Been Up To...

Well, I've been out of the picture for a few weeks and now it's time to share why.

I have been on a 40 journey through fasting. I kept a journal via a special blog and you can now read about it at 40 Days In The Desert.

Our family is off for a week of vacation, so I won't be back to normal posting until the 31st. Until then leave me a comment about what YOU are learning. I would enjoying hearing how God is working in your life.

Hunger Pains

Hunger Pains: A Woman's Guide to a Spiritual Fast Hunger Pains: A Woman's Guide to a Spiritual Fast by Cynthia Moe

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Do ever wonder about fasting? Have you considered doing a longer fast? Maybe even 40 days? If you answer yes to any or all of these questions then I highly recommend this book to you. It is a Woman's guide to fasting, but I think a guy could benefit from the overall concept as well.

Cynthia walks with you through a 40 day fast in her own journal along with scripture and thought provoking questions. As I embarked on my own journey it was like having a friend right by my side encouraging me and helping me. Many times I would be thinking or feeling something and the next day I would read about her own thoughts on the matter! This guide helped me to connect the physical part of fasting with the spiritual part in a healthy balance.

Even if you do not want to fast I highly recommend this book so that you can learn more about fasting. In either case it will encourage your walk with Christ.

Grace Walk: A Highly Recommended Book

You all know that I have a lot of like for books. A lot. I have started a book review blog so I don't bore my faithful readers with a constant stream of book reviews when you just want to read funny things that the kids have done. But every so often I read a book that impacts me in a big way and I just can't keep quiet about it! So here's my review of the latest book to receive 5 stars from me. I hope you will be interested enough to go get your own copy and read it for yourself. (It has since been updated, so the cover is the old one.)

Grace Walk: What You've Always Wanted in The Christian Life Grace Walk: What You've Always Wanted in The Christian Life by Steve McVey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

For my almost 24 years of salvation I have been walking around trying to please God with all that I do, say, and think. While I never would have admitted that I was trying to earn his approval, my actions and behavior boiled down to that. I understood that grace meant receiving something you don't deserve and that grace is what God gave me when He gave me salvation, but never had I truly grasped the fact that each day I am walkinging in His grace. This book and Steve's other book titled Grace Rules Living in the Kingdom of God Where have changed my thinking and understanding about grace in ways that will forever impact my life, my marriage, and my parenting...not to mention all my other relationships.

I have many favorite quotes from this book and my copy of it is dog-eared and underlined over and over. On page 88 Steve says: "It is impossible for you to fulfill the law. If you really want to live a godly lifestyle, the focus of your life must be Him. Not church, not religious activity, not a moral lifestyle, not obeying His commands. Just Him!"

If you are tired and weary in your Christian walk then this book is a good one for you to read. You will be challenged to take your focus off of your checklist, rules, and moral code, and challenged to turn your eyes on Christ and focus on your relationship with Him. "Any person whose Christian life is centered on service is doomed to a life of frustration." (page 95)

Grab your Bible and a copy of Grace Walk and learn about the true freedom of God's grace!

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Hilda Hippo is babysitting for Pig Won't and Pig Will. Hilda patiently waits and teaches the Pigs that obedience is fun. Okay...so the book is not that direct...but you as the parent can very easily take it in that direction and have fun doing it.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I like this book and the series because it makes things so simple for kids to understand, and besides that, who doesn't like it in Richard Scarry form?! But I have to say don't read or read with caution because this one talks about the million years that it takes with some things and I totally don't agree with that and won't teach that to my kids. So through the chapter on Dinosaurs I just made up my own words!

No Roses For Harry!

No Roses for Harry! No Roses for Harry! by Gene Zion

Naughty Bunny

Richard Scarry's Naughty Bunny (Look-Look) Richard Scarry's Naughty Bunny by Golden Books

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

While this book is all about a bunny who is naughty and I didn't really like the whole take on it, it wasn't quite a "not to read" because it did lead to some good conversation with my kids about obeying and disobedience. Most likely this is a book for the parent to preview before sitting down to read with kids...even though it's a simple little book.

Blog Feature: Cardamom's Pod

On Monday & Tuesday I had a small contest about family traditions. You can read that post here. I used Random.org to generate a winner and the winner was Cardamom's Pod! She won a blog feature here and so without further ado...let me introduce you to Cardamom's Pod! Oh, and let me say that I'm so excited to meet her & feature her!

BLOG FEATURE: Cardamom's Pod

1) What name do you go by in bloggy land?

Cardamoms Pod, or Cardamom - but I also use my real name, Kimarie. I answer to all of the above.

2) What's your blog name and how did you come up with that name?

Cardamom's Pod. I love herbs and spices, and cardamom is the only one with "mom" in it! It also comes in pods, which makes me think of a group of people. It's unique and I just liked it; ran it by a few other people and they liked it. Freshly ground spices are intensely flavorful and should be savored - just like everyday life in our family as we face whatever God brings our way!

3) When did you start blogging and why?

I started blogging on March 29, 2009. People had been telling my husband and I for years that we should blog, simply because of the variety of experiences we've had with our large family, and how we like to think outside the box. We like to tell stories and enjoy humor, and our friends kept saying other people would really like to read about our lives. The impetus to get me started was my friend Kimberly at Raising Olives. She started her blog before mine, and then asked for photos of decluttering projects. I had one I really didn't want to tackle, and decided to jump into blogging to hold myself accountable! It's just taken off since then! My husband has plans to start his own blog very soon...

4) What do you enjoy most about blogging?

I have found that it is an enjoyable creative outlet for me. I like writing, photography, and layout - and blogging employs all of those. It also helps me to chronicle and organize my thoughts and ideas, and to focus on on the positive. The feedback I'm getting now is encouraging to me - that what God has taught me in my life can be shared with others to make their lives easier and more joyful.

5) What other hobbies do you have?

Aside from cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, farming - as my daughter said, "those aren't hobbies - those are your job!" - when I have time, I enjoy crocheting, learning to knit with Knifty Knitter, and calligraphy. I've always enjoyed archery and shooting, but lately I've really taking a liking to shooting clays!

6) What's your favorite book you've ever read?

I have a really hard time picking favorite books, because I like so many for different reasons. But the title that jumped into my mind is "Jane Eyre" by Emily Bronte.

7) What do you want people to remember you for?

I would like to be remembered for being a godly and loving wife, mother, and friend.

8) What's your favorite kind of weather and season?

We love the Florida "winter" - no bugs, crisp days, we can turn off the a/c and open the windows! We spend as much time outside as possible - lots of projects, as well as bonfires and camping out in our yard. The low humidity just makes me feel alive and energetic! My idea of a perfect day is a moderate temperature, slight breeze, and puffy clouds dotted across the sky.

9) Tell us about your family in 1 or 2 sentences per family member:

My husband David is incredibly smart, hard-working, upbeat, and just plain fun to be around. We've been married for 15 years and I can NOT imagine my life without him.

Tabitha (14) is an awesome cook, and a natural organizer/manager who can run the house better than me! She loves horses, and is writing several books.

Jonathan (12) is hard-working and dependable, and is our deputy security officer. He raises snakes and mice and loves anything to do with hunting, fishing, or shooting.

Deborah (11) is our kindness barometer, everyone's favorite story-reader, and comes up with some of the deepest theological questions/conclusions.

Samuel (10) is our cuddle-bug, and has always gravitated to the babies in our family. With his keen senses, he is the official spotter on all hunting expeditions.

Nathaniel (9) is our Y2K baby, a talented artist, quick-witted comedian, and always busy with something. He will probably end up as a great illustrator or movie director!

Elizabeth (7) is very princess-like, elegant, and thinks a day is not complete unless she can bake or cook something.

Esther (6) is energetic, fearless, always busy writing, drawing or playing piano, and has a very tender heart.

Miriam (4) has been one of our strongest-willed children, but is very loving and sweet. She has huge blue eyes and loves being near Mommy and Daddy.

Sarah (2) is Miriam's shadow (which isn't always good!) and has been the loudest child we've had. She is fun, and very loving - and pretends everything (from ice cube trays to sweet potatoes to empty ketchup bottles) is a baby.

10) About our family traditions...

Our family traditions change as our children grow - but we have a few regulars and are adding more.

We make eggnog - from scratch - for Christmas and New Year's. I usually quadruple a recipe and use 24 eggs, ending up with about 2 gallons - I think this year we'll need to make more. We grate whole nutmeg or sprinkle cinnamon over it. This started 15 years ago when we were first married and family came to visit us at Christmas. This tradition is my personal favorite! It's delicious, healthy, and very filling.

For Thanksgiving, my oldest daughter makes pumpkin pies from scratch, using pumpkins bought on sale after Halloween. The kids scrape and cook the pumpkin, and make the pies. Last year they cleaned all the seeds out of the pulp and roasted them. My daughter says 8 pies is a minimum number, "so we can have lots of leftovers."

Another fun tradition for us is "Farm Week". My husband takes a week of vacation and we stay home, spending the entire week doing projects for our animals and yard - fencing, barn repairs, construction of needed items. We make sure all the children are involved down to the littlest one - the jobs of nail-bucket holder and stump chopper are important, too! The afternoons usually include fishing, swimming, shooting, games, and there's lots of hearty meals for all the hard workers. We make sure to take lots of pictures, too, that we enjoy looking at years later.

For 3 years in a row we had a "Country Day" at our place and invited a bunch of homeschooling families. We barbecued, took nature walks on our 20 acres, had potato sack races and a hay ride. We haven't done this for a couple years but my children and their friends still talk about it, and we are planning to begin it again.

Now, run over and visit her site at http://www.cardamomspod.com/!

Guest Blogger: Tripping Around The Sun

It has been a busy, busy week for me. So rather then sit at my keyboard with a fried brain I thought it would be a better use of your time to hear some good thoughts from a dear bloggy friend of mine, Cassandra over at Tripping Around The Sun.

I don't remember how we met, or even when now...although I think I landed on her blog somehow. Anyhow, in the big picture those details don't matter 'cause now we're good friends despite the fact we have never met in person or heard each other's voices! We have a bond that has brought us together and that is that we are both wives of pastors. So sit back and enjoy some a wonderful Thursday morning brunch with this thought provoking post. And when you're done...be sure to go visit her little home in the blogosphere!

Some Questions About Prayer

by Cassandra at Tripping Around The Sun

As a pastors wife, I know people can sometimes have preconceived ideas about my prayer life.

Either that I pray for hours on end and practice great intercession or maybe that I do not pray at all...but the truth is in the middle.I love prayer and long to understand more about it but struggle to implement it.

I've tried many disciplined approaches to prayer.

I've journaled. For a short time.

I've prayed in my closet. I've prayed by my bed.

I've prayed scriptures.

I've prayed to songs.

And yet, while I felt in the past that I had a pretty good grip on some of the concepts of prayer...there's this little thing about God and His kingdom...

The more you truly understand...the more you realize you really truly don't...

His vastness--His greatness--it is beyond comprehension.

And so I woke up with these questions this morning, regarding MY prayer life...take them for you as you will...

-Why do I treat prayer as a last resort? As if "desperate times call for desperate measures"? Since when is running to my Father a desperate measure??

-Why do I not pray about everything? Instead, I pray only after I have tried to figure things out myself...

-Why do I not treat prayer as a two way dialogue between myself and the One who cares about me and loves me so? Since when does my prayer time involve only my requests and not His answers or responses?

-Why have I let my faith stumble? Why do I not pray about things because I think God really won't answer them anyway?

Maybe it's just me...but it seems like the enemy of our soul really doesn't want us to pray. And if we do pray, he doesn't want us to pray with faith and trust...he wants us to miss the whole point. To see it as a duty or something to be prideful about. But not as a source of true power...

Cause the truth still remains...

-Prayer engages the grace of God to work through us. It ceases to be our strength or might that works in us but His power when we humble ourselves and pray.

-Prayer is meant to humble us. It's more than a bowed knee...it's a bowed heart. A mind that gets reminded it doesn't know all the answers. A heart that gets reminded that there is One who is greater and can be trusted beyond the way we feel.

-The prayers of a righteous man (thanks to Christ--that is any of us who believe in His perfect work of grace and salvation!) really do avail much...prayer really is powerful and effective...(James 5:16b)

So why do I allow myself to think of it otherwise?

Instead of leaning on my own understanding any further...I am going to talk to my Father about anything and everything...I want to model a life of leaning on Him and trusting Him enough to talk to Him as though He really is there and really cares about my life...

...that prayer is so much more than a formal thing for Sundays...

I'm so hungry to understand prayer.

THE GOOD STUFF

{Originally posted on January 17, 2009}

When Justin and I got married we settled in a small town in rural PA. It was his hometown where all his ancestors grew up since coming from Germany. It was a good place to be. A place where everyone knew everyone and the roots were deep. It was a place that quickly became my home, too, even though I was not a born and bred rural PA girl.

In our first year of marriage we built our own little dream home on top of a hill. And just 3 weeks after our first anniversary we moved into it along with our 2 month old baby girl. (Yes, we had a busy year!)

From the first time we met each other we shared the goal and dream of being in full-time ministry. We also knew that planting our own roots in one location didn't usually go hand-in-hand with full-time ministry. But the life we had just begun...well it was the good life. A job for Justin that was steady and that he loved (truck driver/logger). The ability for Mandy to stay at home and raise our growing family. A cozy home among family and friends. And a decent church and ministry opportunities. Yes, it was the good life. It was the comfortable life. It was the life of meat, cucumbers, melons, garlic, and leeks.

Then in 4 short years of married life (which at the time didn't seem so short!) God finally moved and brought our full-time ministry dream to reality. We were so excited! Finally we could use all the skills, knowledge, and passion we had been storing up in every day of our lives. The only catch was that we had to move.

On July 1, 2006 we did just that. We unloaded a 48 foot trailer that contained all of our earthly possessions in a new location and began to serve God in a full-time ministry job. Well...Justin started the job and I of course supported Him from behind the scene.

But as our life began to find it's new normal groove the excitement wore off and we found ourselves frustrated with problems or overwhelmed with situations. And that's when we would grow a little glassy eyed and see dancing meat, cucumbers, melons, garlic, and leeks before us.

"Oh, for the good life again!" we would sigh. We could envision our life before, comfy, cozy, routine, and of course the problems were all so much smaller!

And that is when God began to teach us about the real good life.

It all starts with the story of the Israelites. And their story sounds a little familiar...

"The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, "If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost--also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!" - Numbers 11: 4-6
When things got rough all the Israelites could see was the good stuff. That is the good stuff being the stuff that they thought was good. They forgot about the slavery aspect and all the horror that went along with it.

And just like they did, so did we. We looked back and saw what we thought was good and lost sight of what was really good. Not that we were in bondage or anything! But God has shown us that the good stuff or the good life is not about what you have and where you live it's about how you live.

The good life is living for Him. The good stuff is doing His will. The good life is growing closer to Him.

I'm so thankful for our good life.

Wait. No, it's not a good life.

It's a GREAT life.

I'm growing closer to God each day. I'm serving Him more each moment. I'm learning how to forget about myself and focus on His desire for me more and more with each passing week.

The good stuff comes when you follow Christ with your whole heart.

{Original Post}

Our family has a tradition that I doubt many people share with us. It is our annual "corn" weekend. I have come to fondly call it our "corn fest". This was my 7th one in 8 years. We missed the 2nd time because we were away on our honeymoon.

What a shame! {insert sarcastic grin} Corn or honeymoon....uhm, that is a no brainer!

Anyway, this year the girls were so excited to go "do corn". We head to Justin's parents who own a small hobby farm and it's an extended family party of husking, washing, blanching, and cutting corn to freeze.
Here are some barn kittens sleeping in the feed manger for the sheep! I know you can't see them well, but it's just too funny not to post!

The ram is kept seperate right now in a pen at the barn and here is Emily climbing up and going to go in to feed him corn husks until I walked around the corner and quickly put a stop to it. Of course I had to snap a quick picture!

Here is my wonderful husband eating peach cobbler for breakfast!

Micah & Abby sitting on the 4-wheeler while the guys picked the corn on Friday night.

Awe....my handsome husband in the corn field!

And here is one cute little kernel!

Mommy & MicahMommommy & Micah: Nothing like being in the country with a nice sunset behind you!

We brought home 23 meals of corn for the year. Yummy!
