Today I was able to spend some wonderful time in the Word of God and in reading some good books. Or should I say a good book. I haven't gotten that good at reading!
I finished up the book How To Study The Bible by John MacArthur and you can read my review over at my book review blog - To Read, Or Not To Read.
It was more than just a bunch of tips and list of "how-to's", it walked me through the why, how, and benefits of studying the Bible. Out of 4 chapters only the last one really talked about how to study. But in that one chapter Dr. MacArthur was able to cover a lot. One thing he highly recommended was to read through the Old Testament once a year. So I jumped on google and tried search after search for "Old Testament Reading Plans". Not much came up. Well, not much that met what I was looking for. Finally I googled "how many chapters are in the Old Testament" and then took that number and divided it by 356 to come up with my own reading plan. That plan is to read 3 chapters of the Old Testament each day. This gives me 44 "grace days". The next part of MacArthur's reading suggestion is to read through a book of the New Testament for 1 month. In other words read that book in it's entirety for 1 month straight. Bigger books, like the gospels, he suggests dividing into 2 or 3 portions and read each section for part of the month. According to his book How To Study The Bible it will take around 2 and a half years to read through the whole New Testament in this way.
So...all this to say...this is my new plan for Bible Reading. I want to wash, renew, refresh, and saturate my mind in the Word of God and this is the way that I have decided to go about doing just that. And a good cup of hot chocolate sure makes it even more enjoyable!
